WoW Forever realms explained: no realm list, but servers, regions and a language setting

WoW Forever has no realm list, but it has servers. Blizzard says the region is the one hard line (no NA and EU play together at launch), each ruleset is its own world, and a language setting groups you with your language.

A great round stone table with a carved map of the world, lit by hanging lanterns, with paths of light linking distant cities, for WoW Forever's servers and regions

WoW Forever has no realm list, but it still has servers. Blizzard calls it “realmless”: you pick a region and a ruleset, and everyone on that ruleset shares one world. On its Oct 22 podcast, the team explained what that does and doesn’t mean. ▶ 45:22

What separates players

Line Hard or soft What it means
Region Hard Americas, Europe, Korea and Taiwan stay apart. No NA and EU play together at launch.
Ruleset Hard Normal, PvP, Role-Play and Roleplay-PvP (Hardcore after launch) are separate worlds.
Language Soft A setting groups you with players of your language, but you can meet and group with anyone in your region.
Layer Soft The game spreads players over copies of a zone, mixing people you’ve met with new faces.

“Really the only hard lines… are just the regions themselves,” said Clay Stone, Associate Production Director, with the rulesets on top. ▶ 49:15

There are still servers

“We didn’t get rid of servers,” lead software engineer Ana Resendez said: real machines run the world in each part of the globe. Realmless means you don’t pick one. ▶ 45:22 That’s why players in Australia and New Zealand stay in the Americas region with its account rules, but connect to physical servers near them for a better ping. ▶ 46:04

NA and EU together? Not at launch

When the guest asked about Americas and Europe playing together, the answer was: “I can tell you that about launch. That’s not how it’s going to work.” Server locations and Battle.net accounts are tied to the region. Blizzard didn’t rule it out for later and asked players to say so if they want it. ▶ 50:38

Playing in your language

There’s an option in the settings for your preferred language. The game places you with players who chose the same one. It’s a soft grouping. Sometimes you’ll meet others, and you can always group with friends who chose another language. ▶ 47:56 ▶ 48:36 A player in Germany who picks English stays in the European region, among English speakers there.

▶ 49:57

Bind on Forever is in the same six languages: English, Deutsch, Español, Português, Français and 한국어.

Seeing the same people again

Blizzard says layering doesn’t give you a hidden social score. It mixes people you’ve played with and new faces, so meeting someone from your starting zone again a few days later in Westfall is by design.

Picking a ruleset

Because each ruleset is its own world, the choice matters more than a realm used to. Blizzard doesn’t expect free moves between them, for faction balance (podcast 4). What each one does is in can you switch rulesets in WoW Forever?, and names are reserved from October 27: WoW Forever name reservation. The rest of the episode is in our podcast 5 recap.

Questions

Does WoW Forever have realms?

Not in the old sense. There's no realm list: you pick a region and a ruleset, and each ruleset is one world. Under the hood there are servers, Blizzard said on Oct 22.

Can NA and EU players play together in WoW Forever?

Not at launch. Blizzard says the region is the one hard line. It didn't rule out cross-region play later and asked players to keep telling them if they want it.

Do Oceanic players get their own servers in WoW Forever?

Yes. Players in Australia and New Zealand stay in the Americas region, but Blizzard says they connect to physical servers near them for a better ping.

Can I play with German or French speakers in WoW Forever?

Yes. A preferred-language option in the settings places you with players of that language within your region. It isn't a hard line: you can group with friends who chose another language.

Can I move my character to another ruleset in WoW Forever?

Blizzard doesn't expect free moves between rulesets, because of faction balance. Plan on a new character if you change your mind.
