A zombie plague is in WoW Forever's server data: the 2008 event's spells, plus new ones of Forever's own
On Oct 28 the live WoW Forever servers got about 50 spells from 2008's zombie plague event, plus new Forever ones such as Ravenous Claw. Blizzard hasn't announced an event; here's what the data shows and doesn't.

WoW Forever’s live servers now hold a zombie plague. The server data our client downloaded on Oct 29 (build 70685) carries about 50 spells from the zombie plague of 2008, the event before Wrath of the Lich King, plus a handful of new spells made for Forever. Blizzard hasn’t announced anything, so all we can show is what the data holds; it gives no date.
None of these spells are in the Classic Era client. They arrived from the server with the Oct 28 changes, the same push that cut Aspect of the Hawk and Trueshot Aura. (Update, build 70707: they’re now in the Forever client files too, and the calendar still has no entry for an event. Details.)
What the 2008 event was
In the weeks before Wrath of the Lich King, players caught a plague and, if no one cured them in time, turned into zombies and went after other players. Healers cured the infected and burned the zombies, and the cities filled with both. Warcraft Wiki has the whole story.
The 2008 spells now on the servers
The infection, word for word from the spells:
- You’re Infected!: “A zombie has infected you. Find a cure before it’s too late!”
- You’re a Zombie!: “You have been transformed! And you are hungry for humanoid brains!”
What a zombie can do:
| Spell | What it does | Cooldown |
|---|---|---|
| Bite! | heals the zombie and infects a humanoid | 2 sec |
| Lurch! | you and nearby zombies run faster for 10 sec, and it breaks slows and crowd control | 30 sec |
| Beckoning Groan | calls up to four zombies to you, if they’re out of combat | 20 sec |
| Mangle! | lowers the target’s armor, stacking up to 20 times, for 12 sec | 3 sec |
| Zombie Explosion! | “destroying yourself but infecting those around you” | none |
The healers get Righteous Fire: “Strike a zombie with righteous fire. After 3 consecutive strikes, it is destroyed.” Cure Infection and Cure Nearby Units came with it.
Forever’s own zombie spells
Three new spells come with Forever’s own IDs, so this isn’t only a copy of 2008:
- Ravenous Claw: “Melee attacks have a chance to infect the target.” The chance is 25%.
- Hunger…: “Seeking fresh meat…”, an aura that ticks every 2 seconds.
- A new You’re Infected! that lasts 5 seconds, next to the 2008 one, which lasts until cured.
Ravenous Claw reads like something a zombie creature carries, which would mean the plague can spread from monsters, not only from players. That’s our reading of the data, not something Blizzard has said.
What we don’t know
- When. Spells in the data carry no date. Blizzard’s Oct 29 podcast said there’s no major new event at launch, and that the team wants events that come and go, like the Darkmoon Faire. ▶ 58:31
- Where and how you catch it. No zombie creature or quest for it is in the data we have.
- Hardcore. In 2008 turning into a zombie wasn’t a death. How it would work on Hardcore, once that ruleset opens after launch, is unknown.
The linked spells each have a page with their full data. If the plague turns up in game, we’ll add where and when here. What else Blizzard said about events and servers is in its last podcast before launch.
