Guide
How to install addons in WoW Forever, leveling guides included
Forever takes its own addon versions, in its own folder. The CurseForge app, Wago or a zip all work; here are the folder, the slash commands for the leveling guide addons, and the fixes when an addon won't show.
WoW Forever runs on the modern game’s interface, so Classic Era addons don’t load in it. Every addon needs a Forever version, built for interface number 16001 in the beta, and it goes in Forever’s own AddOns folder. On the beta that folder is World of Warcraft\_classic_beta_\Interface\AddOns. Blizzard hasn’t named the live game’s folder yet; it will sit beside _classic_beta_ once the launcher installs Forever.
With the CurseForge app
The CurseForge app has supported Forever since Sep 22.
- Open the app, pick World of Warcraft, and switch the game version to Forever.
- Search for the addon and press Install. The app picks the Forever file and puts it in the right folder.
- Start the game, or restart it if it was open.
The app’s Forever list only shows addons whose makers uploaded a Forever file. If a favourite is missing, it has no Forever version yet. The best WoW Forever addons page checks some seventy popular ones and names a stand-in where there’s none.
Wago Addons lists Forever too and works the same way through the Wago app.
By hand, from a zip
- Download the Forever file from the addon’s page. On CurseForge, open Files and pick one marked Forever.
- Unzip it. You get one or more folders, each with a
.tocfile inside. - Move those folders into
World of Warcraft\_classic_beta_\Interface\AddOns. On a Mac the path starts at/Applications/World of Warcraft/_classic_beta_/. - Restart the game.
The folder has to sit straight under AddOns. A zip that unpacks to AddOns\Questie-12.1.0\Questie\Questie.toc has one folder too many, and the game won’t see it.
The leveling guide addons, after install
| Addon | Open it with | Paid part arrives as |
|---|---|---|
| BoF Guide (CurseForge, Wago) | /bofg |
An import string: /bofg import, paste, Accept |
| ForeverWisp | /wisp |
A ForeverWispPack folder you put beside the addon |
| RestedXP | its own guide window (setup) | An import string tied to your Battle.net ID |
| Zygor | the Zygor client installs its Guide Viewer | Its Elite subscription, from launch |
| Questie | /questie for its options |
Free, nothing to import |
Questie marks quests on your map and pairs with any of the route addons. The others each play a route. Run one route addon at a time: two that both accept and hand in quests act on the same quest windows. The full comparison is on WoW Forever leveling addons, compared.
When an addon doesn’t show
- Brand-new addons need a full restart. A
/reloadpicks up changes to addons the game already knows, but a folder added while the game is running stays invisible until you quit and start again. We hit this testing our own guide. - Check the AddOns button on the character screen. Every addon in the folder is listed there. If yours is missing, the folder is in the wrong place or nested one level too deep.
- “Out of date” means a Classic or older file. Get the file marked Forever.
- Errors after a game update usually mean the addon needs its own update. The CurseForge and Wago apps fetch it; by hand, replace the old folder with the new one.
Are addons allowed?
Yes. Blizzard’s add-on policy covers Forever like every other version: addons must be free, their code must be readable, and they can’t ask for money in game. What an addon can do in combat is set by the game itself, and Forever closes more of it than Classic did, the same limits Blizzard brought to the modern game. That’s why some old favourites changed or went away. Are paid leveling guides allowed? has the longer answer for guides sold outside the addon.
