Night Watchman's Torch in WoW Forever: where to get it in Duskwood, and what it lights

WoW Forever's nights are darker, and the Night Watchman's Torch is the light you carry. A dead Night Watch Guard at Raven Hill in Duskwood gives it at night, from level 1. It burns for 5 minutes and goes out in combat.

A lit torch planted in the mud of a dark forest graveyard at night, its warm glow on crooked headstones and fog, for WoW Forever's Night Watchman's Torch

Blizzard rebuilt WoW Forever’s lighting, and shaded forests and nights are much darker than in Classic. Duskwood under its trees is the darkest of them, and the game’s answer is the Night Watchman’s Torch: a light you carry, free from a one-step quest in Duskwood. Here’s where to find it and what it does, from the launch client (build 70790), the data the live servers sent on launch night and Blizzard’s beta notes.

Where to get it

The torch comes from An Unfortunate End (quest 98372), which starts and ends on the body of a dead Night Watch Guard. The quest needs level 1, so any character can take it.

  1. Go to Raven Hill in western Duskwood. Questie’s Forever data puts the guard at 17.0, 54.9, on the town’s western edge.
  2. Go at night. Method found him only after about 20:00 game time and reports that he moves around the south and west of the zone, so if he isn’t at Raven Hill, search those parts.
  3. Type /target Night Watch Guard to find him in the dark, take the quest from his body and hand it straight back.

Method found that several players can take the quest from the same body, so a crowd at Raven Hill doesn’t mean a wait.

Getting there:

  • Alliance: from Stormwind, go south through Elwynn Forest into Duskwood, then take the road west to Raven Hill. Darkshire is the other way, east. A Night Elf takes the boat from Auberdine to Stormwind first.
  • Horde: take the zeppelin from Orgrimmar to Grom’gol in Stranglethorn Vale and head north into Duskwood. One Horde player on Blizzard’s forum timed the whole trip from Ratchet at 15 minutes.

On Hardcore, Raven Hill sits in a level 20 to 30 zone, and its cemetery is full of undead in their mid-20s. A low-level character should keep to the road, take the quest and leave the way it came.

What it does

Cast 1 sec
Lasts 5 minutes
Lights you, and players within 10 yards
Goes out the moment you enter combat
Carry one (unique), binds when picked up

Light it, and the torch burns in your hand for 5 minutes. It’s an item, not a toy: put it on your action bar from your bags. Method also reports that water and the capital cities put it out, and a 30 second wait before you can light it again. Neither shows in the game files, so treat them as reported.

Players near you are lit too. On Oct 8 Blizzard removed the visible glow from them so that only the bearer shows the torch, but they still get the light: one torch covers a group walking close together.

What Blizzard changed during the beta

  • Oct 1: the torch caused lag in some situations and couldn’t be put out. Both fixed.
  • Oct 8: only the bearer shows the torch’s glow, not the players it lights.
  • Oct 15: fixed for Horde characters, some of whom couldn’t hold it.

Players on Blizzard’s forum reported a torch that lit but showed no torch in the hand, and on Oct 16 one wrote that it had grown dimmer over the week. Neither is in Blizzard’s notes. If you see either on the live servers, the torch still gives its light.

Questions

How do you get a torch in WoW Forever?

Go to Raven Hill in western Duskwood at night and find the body of a dead Night Watch Guard, at about 17, 55. His quest, An Unfortunate End, hands in on the spot and rewards the Night Watchman's Torch. Any level can take it.

What does the Night Watchman's Torch do?

It lights the area around you for 5 minutes after a 1 second cast, and players within 10 yards are lit too. It goes out as soon as you enter combat. You can carry one, and it binds when you pick it up.

Is the Night Watchman's Torch a toy?

No. It's an item that sits in your bags (item 280612), not an entry in the toy box. If you delete it, go back to the guard for another.

Can Horde get the Night Watchman's Torch?

Yes. The quest is open to both factions. Horde players take the zeppelin to Grom'gol in Stranglethorn Vale and head north into Duskwood. Blizzard fixed the torch for Horde characters on Oct 15.
