Class deep dives: Rogue and Warlock
103 notes, each checked against the game files of build 1.60.1.70291. The note is Blizzard's wording; "The files" is what the client data shows. Read the original post.
Baseline Abilities
- No claim to check
Poisons
The files Section heading for the poison lines below; it makes no claim of its own.
- Matches the files
Charges increased on all poisons.
The files Every poison with charges has 50% more in 70291: Instant Poison VI 115 to 175, Deadly Poison V 120 to 180, Wound Poison IV 105 to 160 and Mind-numbing Poison III 100 to 150 (enchant charges). Crippling Poison has no charges in either client.
- Matches the files
Poisons can now be applied to weapons at the same time as temporary enchantments like Weightstones and Sharpening Stones.
The files Poisons apply their enchant through effect 360 in 70291 (Instant Poison VI 11340, Crippling Poison 3408), where Classic Era used the temporary enchant effect 54. Sharpening Stones and Weightstones keep effect 54 (spells 16138 and 16622), so the two sit in separate slots.
- Partly
Feint: Threat reduction doubled.
The files Threat reduction went up five times instead of doubling: rank 5 from 800 to 4000 and rank 1 from 150 to 750, with the per-level part from 1 to 5 (threat effect, spells 25302 and 1966). Cower and Disengage show an exact doubling in the same comparison.
- Matches the files
Sap: Using this ability no longer breaks Stealth.
The files All three Sap ranks gained the 'does not break stealth' attribute flag that Distract carries (Attributes_1 0x20), and the tooltip ends with 'Does not break Stealth.' Classic's Sap had neither.
- Matches the files
Distract: This ability now also causes affected enemies to have reduced Stealth detection for 10 seconds. However, this debuff also means player enemies will now know there is a Rogue nearby to look for.
The files Distract (1725) gained a second effect and a 10 sec duration: the tooltip reads 'reducing their Stealth detection as if they were 1 level lower for 10 seconds', and the debuff shows as 'Stealth detection reduced.' on the target.
- Matches the files
Expose Armor: Armor reduction increased to match the armor reduction caused by 5 applications of Sunder Armor at approximately the same level.
The files At 5 combo points Expose Armor removes 450, 900, 1350, 1800 and 2250 armor at ranks 1 to 5 (Classic 400 to 1700), five times Sunder Armor ranks 1 to 5 (90 to 450 per stack, learned at 10 to 58 against Expose Armor's 14 to 56). Build 70291 moved the armor effect from aura 22 to aura 674 with the same amounts.
- Matches the files
Axes: Rogues can now learn to equip one-handed axes. This increase in itemization choices lets us make a more diverse offering of weapons and know that Rogues will still benefit. Rogues as an archetype include brigands and outlaws, who often make use of axes in fantasy and medieval storytelling.
The files One-Handed Axes (196) adds the Rogue bit to its class mask in 70291 (71 to 79), and the Axes skill rows 629 and 630 go from Warrior only (1) to Warrior and Rogue (9). Rogues get One-Handed Axes from level 1.
Assassination
- Matches the files
Improved Gouge: Moved to row 1 of Assassination from Combat.
The files Improved Gouge (13741) sits in Assassination row 1 in 70291; Classic had it in Combat row 1. Its 0.5/1/1.5 sec bonus is unchanged.
- Matches the files
Remorseless Attacks: Now also affects Mutilate.
The files Remorseless Attacks (14144) lists Sinister Strike, Backstab, Ambush, Mutilate and Ghostly Strike at 20/40% crit (tooltip). Classic's list had no Mutilate.
- Matches the files
Malice: Now increases your critical strike chance with all attacks and Poisons, instead of just melee attacks.
The files Malice (14138) switched from aura 52 (melee crit) to aura 290 (crit with everything), and the tooltip reads 'all attacks and Poisons' for 1-5%.
- Partly
Murder: Now also applies to Giants but no longer applies to Beasts and Dragonkin.
The files Beasts and Dragonkin are gone: the creature type mask went from 211 to 80 (Humanoid and Giant), at 2/4% damage (spell 14158). Giants aren't new, since Classic's mask and tooltip already covered them, and the bonus doubled from Classic's 1/2%.
- Matches the files
Improved Expose Armor: (Redesigned.) No longer increases the effectiveness of Expose Armor, instead reduces the Energy cost of Expose Armor and Expose Armor now refunds Combo Points when used with 5 Combo Points.
The files Improved Expose Armor (14168) cuts Expose Armor's Energy cost by 10 and refunds 2 Combo Points when cast with 5 (5/10 Energy and 1/2 points per rank, tooltip). Classic's version raised the armor reduction by 25/50%.
- Matches the files
Lethality: Now also applies to Mutilate. Bonus to critical damage also lowered some.
The files Lethality (14128) lists Mutilate and gives 4/8/12/16/20% crit damage bonus, down from Classic's 6% per point (30% at 5).
- Matches the files
Cold Blood: Moved from 21-point gold medal talent to 16-point gold medal talent. Now also applies to Mutilate.
The files Cold Blood (14177) needs 15 points in 70291 (Assassination row 4, the 16-point slot); Classic needed 20 (row 5). The tooltip adds Mutilate to Sinister Strike, Backstab, Ambush and Eviscerate.
- Matches the files
Improved Poisons: Now also grants a large chance for Poisons not to consume charges when triggered. We want Assassination to be a Poison-focused playstyle, so this helps their Poisons last much longer without needing to be reapplied.
The files Improved Poisons (14113) gives 2/4/6/8/10% more chance to apply Poisons and a 10/20/30/40/50% chance not to use a charge (tooltip). Classic had the 2% per point apply chance only.
- Matches the files
Vigor: Now a 2-point talent on row 5 instead of the 31-point gold medal talent. Same total effect.
The files Vigor (14983) is a 2-rank talent in Assassination row 5 (20 points) at +5/10 maximum Energy. Classic had 1 rank, +10 Energy, at 30 points (row 7).
- Matches the files
Mutilate: (New 21-point gold medal talent.) This 60 Energy Combo ability strikes with both hands as weapon damage from each weapon, but both must be daggers. This damage is increased against Poisoned targets and awards 2 Combo Points. Each hand has a chance to trigger various procs.
The files Mutilate (1310707) needs 20 points (Assassination row 5), costs 60 Energy, requires a dagger (item mask 32768), fires one strike per hand (spells 1310706 and 1310705), deals 20% more to Poisoned targets and awards 2 Combo Points. Which procs each hand can trigger is decided by the server.
- Matches the files
Improved Kidney Shot: The increased damage from this talent now applies only to your own attacks and Poisons.
The files Kidney Shot targets take 5/10% more damage 'from your poisons and attacks' (tooltip, spell 14174). Classic gave 3% per point from all sources over 3 ranks.
- Partly
Seal Fate: No longer requires Cold Blood as a pre-requisite. Note that Mutilate will trigger this exactly once if either or both hands generates a critical strike.
The files The Cold Blood requirement is gone: Classic's Seal Fate (talent 283) required Cold Blood (talent 280), and the 70291 node has no prerequisite. The once-per-Mutilate rule isn't in any field we can read.
- Matches the files
Venom: New 31-point gold medal talent. This new 25 Energy Finisher ability grants 30% increased damage to your Poisons and 10% increased chance to apply Poisons. Duration determined by number of Combo Points spent. Our expectation is that Assassination focuses its finishers on maintaining Venom and Slice and Dice, and damaging finishers like Rupture and Eviscerate are a lower priority. Other Rogue builds would put more emphasis on those damaging Finishers.
The files Venom (1310703) needs 30 points (Assassination row 7, after Mutilate), costs 25 Energy, raises Poison damage by 30% and Poison apply chance by 10%, and lasts 9 to 21 sec by combo points (tooltip). The finisher priorities are design intent.
Combat
- Matches the files
Improved Eviscerate: Moved to row 1 from Assassination . Damage bonus increased.
The files Improved Eviscerate (14162) is Combat row 1 in 70291 (Classic: Assassination row 1), and the bonus rose from 5/10/15% to 7/13/20%.
- Matches the files
Puncturing Wounds: (Formerly Improved Backstab.) Now also increases Mutilate crit chance by a lesser percentage, and gives Backstab a chance to grant an additional Combo Point.
The files Puncturing Wounds (1224716) takes Improved Backstab's spot (Combat row 2, column 1): Backstab crit +10/20/30% as before, Mutilate crit +5/10/15%, and a 15/30/45% chance for Backstab to add a Combo Point (tooltip).
- Matches the files
Deflection: Now grants twice as much Parry chance per point.
The files Deflection (13713) gives 2/4/6% Parry over 3 ranks; Classic gave 1% per point over 5, so the top value went from 5% to 6%.
- Matches the files
Precision: Now increases chance to hit with all spells and attacks, including Poisons, instead of just melee weapon attacks.
The files Precision (13705) gained a spell hit effect (aura 55) next to Classic's melee hit effect (aura 54), and the tooltip drops 'with melee weapons'. The line leaves out the cut from 5 ranks (5%) to 3 ranks (3%).
- Matches the files
Endurance: Now reduces Sprint and Evasion cooldown by a percentage, resulting in a larger total reduction for both.
The files Endurance (13742) cuts Sprint and Evasion cooldowns by 30/60% (aura 108) instead of 45/90 sec (aura 107). Both have 5 min cooldowns, so 2 points save 3 min instead of 1.5.
- Matches the files
Flawless Execution: New 16-point gold medal talent. Reduces the Energy cost of Eviscerate by 10.
The files Flawless Execution (1310711) is a 1-rank Combat talent at 15 points (row 4, the 16-point slot) and reduces Eviscerate's Energy cost by 10 (tooltip).
- Matches the files
Dual Wield Specialization: Increase to off-hand damage reduced.
The files Dual Wield Specialization (13715) gives 5% off-hand damage per point (25% at 5); Classic gave 10% per point (50%).
- Matches the files
Hack and Slash: This new row 5 talent combines the benefits of the removed talents Dagger Specialization, Mace Specialization, Sword Specialization, and Fist Weapon Specialization, and also adds a bonus for Axes. Axes gain the same benefit as Swords, a chance to make an extra attack. The bonus for Maces causes attacks to ignore some of the target’s armor, rather than provide a chance to Stun.
The files Hack and Slash (13960) is Combat row 5 (20 points): Axe and Sword 1-5% chance for an extra attack, Dagger and Fist 1-5% crit, Mace ignores 3-15% of armor (tooltip). Dagger, Mace and Fist Weapon Specialization are gone from the tree, and Hack and Slash reuses Sword Specialization's spell ID.
- Matches the files
Weapon Expertise: (Redesigned.) Now reduces the chance for a target to Dodge or Parry your attacks.
The files Weapon Expertise (30919) reduces the chance for your attacks to be Dodged or Parried by 1/2% (tooltip). Classic gave +3 weapon skill per point with Swords, Fist Weapons and Daggers.
- Matches the files
Aggression: Now also increases Backstab damage. We wanted the Combat specialization to support a Backstab-oriented build as well as a Sinister Strike-oriented build. So, this and several other talents gained more Backstab support.
The files Aggression (18427) lists Sinister Strike, Backstab and Eviscerate at 2/4/6%; Classic's tooltip had no Backstab.
Subtlety
- Matches the files
Camouflage: Moved from row 2 up to row 1.
The files Camouflage (13975) is Subtlety row 1 in 70291 and row 2 in Classic (talent node position).
- Matches the files
Master of Deception: Reduced from 5 talent points to 3 talent points for the same effect. The tooltip has been clarified to state the exact impact of the improvement to Stealth.
The files Master of Deception (13958) has 3 ranks at 5/10/15 stealth level, the same 15 as Classic's rank 5 (13973), and the tooltip reads 'as if you were 3 levels higher'.
- Matches the files
Opportunity: Now also affects Mutilate.
The files Opportunity (14057) lists Backstab, Garrote, Ambush and Mutilate (tooltip). The line leaves out the cut from 5 ranks at 4% (20%) to 2 ranks at 5/10%, and the 'when striking from behind' wording is gone.
- Matches the files
Setup: Chance to trigger increased so that 3 points grants 100% chance.
The files Setup (13983) gives a 33/67/100% chance; Classic was 15% per point (45% at 3).
- Matches the files
Dirty Tricks: Formerly Improved Sap. Moved from row 4 up to row 2. (Redesigned.) Sap never breaks Stealth now baseline. Instead, this talent reduces the Energy cost of Sap and Blind by a substantial amount.
The files Dirty Tricks (1224782) is Subtlety row 2 and cuts Sap and Blind Energy costs by 25/50% (Sap 65, Blind 30). Improved Sap, Classic's row 4 talent with a 30% chance to restealth, is gone, and Sap's tooltip says 'Does not break Stealth.'
- Matches the files
Improved Ambush: Moved from row 3 to row 2.

The files Initiative (13976) gives a 33/67/100% chance; Classic was 25% per point (75% at 3).
- Matches the files
Ghostly Strike: Percentage damage done increased while a Dagger is equipped instead of another weapon.
The files Ghostly Strike (14278) deals 125% weapon damage, or 180% with a Dagger in the main hand (tooltip). Classic was 125% with any weapon.
- Matches the files
Improved Distract: (New row 3 talent.) Increases the radius of effect of your Distract, and Distracted enemies now suffer an increased penalty to their Stealth detection.
The files Improved Distract (14084) is a 2-rank Subtlety row 3 talent that isn't in the Classic Era tree: +5 yds Distract radius, and distracted enemies detect Stealth as though 2 more levels lower (tooltip).
- Matches the files
Heightened Senses: Moved from row 5 up to row 4. Tooltip clarified to describe the exact effect of the increased Stealth detection.
The files Heightened Senses (30894) is Subtlety row 4 in 70291 (Classic row 5). The tooltip reads 'Increases your Stealth detection as if you were 3 levels higher' (value 15 at 2 points) plus 4% less chance to be hit by spells and ranged attacks.
- Matches the files

- Matches the files

The files Dirty Deeds (14082) adds 'your Garrote ability no longer requires you to be behind your target' to its 10/20 Energy cut (tooltip).
- Matches the files

Baseline Abilities
- Matches the files
Curse of Agony and Curse of Doom are now Banes. Only one Bane can be active per Warlock on a single target. All effects that interacted with Curses now also interact with Banes.
The files Every Curse of Agony rank (980 to 11713) is named Bane of Agony and Curse of Doom (603) is Bane of Doom, each saying 'Only one Bane per Warlock can be active on any one target.' Amplify Curse and Pandemic name Bane of Agony. The line skips a damage cut: Bane of Agony rank 6 deals 552 over 24 sec (Classic 1044) and Bane of Doom 1742 (Classic 3200).
- Matches the files

- Not in the files
