The WoW Forever Legacy system: how points work, what they buy, and what carries over

What is the Legacy system in WoW Forever? 65 challenges earn account-wide points, each character spends up to 16 on perks like faster rested XP and earlier talents, and the total earns a spectral bear mount. What Hardcore keeps.

Legacy is WoW Forever’s account-wide progression. You complete Legacy Challenges, each worth one point. Every character on your account can spend those points on perks of its own, like faster rested XP or talents a few levels early, and the points you earn in all unlock toys and a mount. Blizzard explained it in a September post, and the beta’s game files fill in the numbers.

How you unlock it

You get Legacy as soon as you earn your first point. For most players, Blizzard says, that’s when their first character reaches level 25. Reaching 150 in a crafting profession or exploring the whole world map also opens it. It sits behind the shield icon on the menu, or the Y key.

The 65 challenges

Each challenge is worth one point, 65 in all:

Category Points How
Classes 27 Reach level 25, 45 and 60 with each of the nine classes
Tradeskills 18 Reach 150, 225 and 300 in each crafting profession
Player vs. Player 12 PvP ranks, the battleground reputations, the Field of Honor season
Dungeons 3 Every final boss of the level 15-25, 26-45 and 46-60 dungeons
Raids 3 Onyxia, all of Hyjal Summit, all of the Barrow Deeps
Adventure 2 Explore the whole world map; finish the Lord Valthalak questline

The points belong to your Battle.net account and work for all your non-Hardcore characters.

The 16-point cap

Each character can spend up to 16 points at launch. Blizzard set the cap so new players aren’t left too far behind, and so nobody has to make alts: one character can earn up to 29 points by itself from leveling, professions, PvP, exploring, dungeons and raids. Every character spends its points separately, so a gatherer and a raider on the same account can pick different perks.

What the perks do

The points go into three trees of nine perks each. Some highlights, with their ranks from the game files:

  • Adventure: Well Rested makes rested XP build 4 to 20% faster, Talented starts your talent points up to five levels early (from level 5 instead of 10), and Thrill of Adventure gives back a little Health and Mana after kills. Frequent Flier makes flights cheaper and faster.
  • Professions: Working Overtime raises your chance of a skill-up by up to 20%, Bountiful Harvest finds more Scarce materials, Bartering takes 5 or 10% off vendor prices, and Master Chef can cook extra food.
  • Resourcefulness: Gourmand makes food buffs last longer, Reinforce cuts durability loss on death, Diplomat raises reputation gains, and Reagent Economy drops the purchasable reagents from your class abilities.

Plan your 16 points in the WoW Forever Legacy planner, which has every perk and challenge from the files.

The rewards: a spectral bear

Points keep counting past the cap, and the total earns rewards for the whole account:

Points Reward
15 Replica Ironforge Air Rifle (a toy)
25 Spectral Bear Cub (a pet)
40 Spectral Bear Tabard
55 Reins of the Spectral Bear (an epic mount)

Legacy and Hardcore

Hardcore works differently, and it opens sometime after launch.

  • Points from other rulesets don’t carry into Hardcore. Blizzard’s post says the points work for your non-Hardcore characters.
  • A milestone stays earned. At BlizzCon the Hardcore panel gave the example: reach level 25 on a class and that point is yours, even if the character dies at 26. Your next run starts a little stronger. ▶ 28:31
  • Hardcore gets its own challenges. PvP challenges can’t really be done in Hardcore, so Blizzard plans Hardcore-only challenges instead.

Planning the fastest 16

Every challenge pays once per account, so a second Warrior or a second Tailor earns nothing. For the plans that reach 16 soonest, which alts and crafts to pair, and the perks to buy at each stage, see the Legacy points strategy guide, with a roster planner that counts it all.

Ticking them off as you level

The free BoF Guide has a Legacy guide for the challenges on the way to level 30: the early dungeons, your first class milestone at 25 and the crafting milestones, ticked off from your account as you go. Where each class picks up its points along the road is in the WoW Forever leveling guide.

Questions

What is the Legacy system in WoW Forever?

An account-wide progression system. You complete Legacy Challenges (reach level 25, 45 and 60 on a class, skill up a profession, clear dungeons, and so on), each worth one point. Every character can spend those points on its own perks, and the total unlocks cosmetic rewards for the account.

Do Legacy points carry over to alts in WoW Forever?

Yes. Legacy points are account-wide on your Battle.net account and available to all your non-Hardcore characters. Each character spends them independently, so two characters can pick different perks.

How many Legacy points can you spend in WoW Forever?

Up to 16 per character at launch, Blizzard says. There are 65 points to earn in all, and up to 29 of them can be earned on a single character, so you don't need alts to reach the cap.

When does the Legacy system unlock?

When you earn your first Legacy point: for most players when their first character reaches level 25. Reaching 150 in a crafting profession or exploring the whole world map unlocks it too. Open it with the shield icon or the Y key.

Does Legacy work in Hardcore?

Hardcore characters can't use the points earned on other rulesets. Blizzard said Hardcore keeps its own Legacy progress, with Hardcore-only challenges, and that a point earned at level 25 stays even if the character dies at 26. Hardcore opens sometime after launch.
