Guide
In-game leveling guide, a guide on the web, or play blind: picking how to level in WoW Forever
Forever puts 480 new quests on the road to 30 alone, so playing blind has more to find than Classic ever did. What each way of leveling costs you in time and surprises, and how to mix them.
Classic players argued about guides for twenty years, and Forever changes the question a little. On the road to 30, the BoF Guide’s free routes take in 1,476 quests, and 480 of them are new in Forever. Even a player who knows Classic by heart is partly playing blind this time.
There are three ways to level, and they mix well.
Playing blind
You read the quest text, look at the map and find your own way.
- The reward: every surprise Forever has, found the way it was written. Blizzard’s Sep 12 panel recap talks about a world built around “challenge, preparation, communication, and cooperation”, which is a blind player’s game.
- The price is walking. Quests hand in across a zone in the wrong order, a hub gets visited three times, and a quest that needs a group turns up mid-chain.
- The halfway house is built in. Forever’s map marks quest objectives and quest levels, each a one-click switch. How to switch it on. Turn them off for the full 2004 feel.
A guide on the web
A written route on a second screen or a phone.
- You see the order, the reasons and the whole zone at a glance, with nothing to install. Reading a zone ahead also shows you its dangers before you get there.
- You give up your eyes on the game, and you keep your own place in the text.
- Free here: a leveling guide for each of Forever’s 41 leveling zones, starting from the zones by level, each with its route to 30, every quest in the zone and a “What can kill you here” section. The Alliance and Horde guides put them in order, and every class has its own, such as the Mage leveling guide.
An in-game leveling guide
An addon that puts the route in your game window: the next step, an arrow to it, live objectives and a warning before a dangerous pull.
- It saves the most walking. It reads your quest log, level and flight paths, so it knows what you’ve done and picks up wherever your character is.
- It asks for an addon install, and you may feel led by the hand. Most route addons hand quests in for you; that switches off.
- The choice: the BoF Guide is ours and free to 30, in public beta now. RestedXP, ForeverWisp, Zygor, Guidelime and the rest are side by side on WoW Forever leveling addons, compared.
Which way fits
| You want | Try |
|---|---|
| Forever’s new content as a surprise | Blind, with the map’s quest objectives on |
| To reach 60 with the least wasted time | An in-game guide |
| To plan at work and play at night | The web guides, then the addon in game |
| A Hardcore character to live | A guide that warns before the pull: what a Hardcore leveling addon must do |
| Your second character, same faction | An in-game guide; you’ve seen the story |
Leveling from 1 to 60 takes 4,084,700 XP in Forever, and how long that is in hours depends on all of the above. How long WoW Forever leveling takes charts the times creators showed.
